Built between 1853 and 1861 foe a wealthy cotton merchant, this Madison Square mansion is best known as General William Tecumseh Sherman's headquarters after his Match to the Sea ended at Savannah in December 1864. Here, Sherman issued Special Field Order No. 15, setting aside confiscated coastal lands for formerly enslaved families in 40-acre parcels.
