Paint with Confidence: Master the Alla Prima Method

with David Lussier

Alla Prima—meaning “at one go”—is a direct and expressive way of painting that captures the vitality of a subject in a single session. In his celebrated essay In Praise of Painterly Painters, artist and teacher Charles Movalli described painterly painters as working through seeming contradictions: they finish by not finishing, include by leaving out, and paint more by painting less. Their methods appear simple, yet the results are immediate and powerful.

In this immersive three-day workshop, we will explore the Alla Prima approach and learn how a “less is more” mindset can transform the way we paint. Rather than focusing on objects, we will train our eyes to see shapes of color and value, allowing us to respond quickly and make confident, expressive marks on the canvas.

Each day will include a live painting demonstration and discussion covering essential principles of painting—composition, design, edges, value, and color—all of which are key to creating paintings filled with light, atmosphere, and life.

Participants will receive handouts on the Alla Prima process, and plenty of individual instruction will follow each demonstration to help you apply the concepts in your own work.

Whether you are just beginning or an experienced painter looking to loosen up and paint more boldly, this workshop will help you develop a stronger, more confident approach to painting.

All skill levels welcome – participants will have the choice to work from a wide array of photo references or plein air on location.

About David

David Lussier is an award-winning contemporary impressionist and nationally recognized plein air painter and workshop instructor.  He is a painter in the purist sense of the word.  In his poetic and intimage oil landscapes he strives to capture the essence and sense of place of his subject matter. His use of bold broad brushwork brings the surfaces to life and begs the viewer to return for a second look.  As a commercially trained illustrator, he quickly realized that his passion was in the fine arts and he changed careers.  His work has received more than 75 prizes and is in numerous private and corporate collections throughout the United States and abroad.  His paintings have been featured in many art journals and he is a professional member of some of the finest art associations and groups in the country.  David is also an official U.S. Open artist for the United States Golf Association.  Four of his paintings hang in the permanent collection of the USGA Museum in Far Hills, New Jersey and most recently two of his paintings of the iconic and famous number 2 course at Pinehurst Resort were installed at the USGA’s new campus at Golf House in Pinehurst, North Carolina.
