PASCAL'S - $2,500
Founded in 1947 as a sandwich shop by brothers Robert and James Pascal, Pascal’s moved to a larger space across the street in 1959. At a time when segregation ruled the South, it became one of the first restaurants in Atlanta to seat Black and white patrons together at the same tables.
During the 1960s, Pascal’s emerged as the unofficial headquarters of the Civil Rights Movement in Atlanta. Movement leaders frequently gathered there to discuss strategy and plan protests. Among those who met at Pascal’s were Martin Luther King Jr., Andrew Young, John Lewis, Julian Bond, Joseph Lowery, Jesse Jackson, Ralph David Abernathy, and Adam Clayton Powell.
At the height of violent attacks on civil rights activists, Pascal’s remained open 24 hours a day, serving as a place of refuge and safety. The restaurant regularly posted bond for arrested activists and provided free meals in support of the movement.
Today, Pascal’s operates at a location on Northside Drive in Atlanta’s Castleberry Hill neighborhood and also serves as a food-service provider at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
