CANDLER FIELD - $20,000
In 1919, Asa Candler, Sr. donated a defunct Atlanta Speedway property to the city, paving the way for Atlanta’s first airfield, Asa G. Candler Field. When the facility officially opened in 1925, it became Atlanta Municipal Airport.
A young city councilman, William B. Hartsfield, was appointed chairman of the city’s first Aviation Committee. Recognizing aviation’s potential, Hartsfield declared in 1927 that no greater investment could be made in Atlanta’s future than the full development of Candler Field as the South’s leading airport. His vision helped establish Atlanta’s dominance in regional air travel.
Hartsfield later served as Atlanta’s longtime mayor and continued to champion aviation as a driver of economic growth. The airport was eventually renamed in his honor. Major expansions during Mayor Maynard B. Jackson’s administration in the 1970s transformed it into an international hub, leading to its current name, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
Today, Hartsfield-Jackson is a vital economic engine for Atlanta and Georgia, employing more than 65,000 people and serving over 110 million passengers annually, making it the world’s busiest airport.
